Surprise Eviction for Willow Bend Apartment Tenants

JACKSONVILLE, AR - The parents of a two-year-old who died in a Jacksonville apartment complex have been given 10 days to move out after they failed to pay the rent. We initially covered this story because parents were concerned that this and another's child's death could have been linked to the condition of the apartments. According to Jessica Rollins, she was under the impression that a verbal agreement had been reached. But according to Rollins on August 18 she received a letter telling her she had 10 days to vacate the premises, instead of the 30 day notice she pointed to in her lease terms. Another letter she had been provided made note that her rent could increase but did not mention termination. "I talked to Miss Erica in the office about I wasn't going to be able to pay my rent this month because my son passing away and had to pay for his funeral and I would double it next month," said Rollins. "When you buy your home, your grandmother, father, and b...

Huge crowds march through San Francisco as right-wing protesters lie low

ALAMEDA — Tenants have once more been told to vacate the Bayview Apartments on Central Avenue, the same complex where a mass eviction was threatened nearly two years ago. Rommel Laguardia, who lives with his wife and three children in a one-bedroom unit for $1,064 each month, said he found a three-day notice on his front door when he woke up Friday morning. Three other tenants got similar notices at the 33-unit complex at 470 Central Ave. An additional three tenants received 60-day notices. “These notices that are coming now are just retaliation,” said Laguardia, who has fought to stay at the complex ever since San Jose- based Sridhar Equities Inc. bought the property in October 2015 for $6.1 million and soon afterward told all tenants to leave so that upgrades could be carried out. No one from Sridhar Equities was immediately available for comment. Like the Alameda Journal Facebook page for neighborhood news and conversation from Alameda and beyond. Council in July gave third reading to a housing agreement between it and Viam Holdings (Amacon) that specifies that the new buildings that replace the Sunrise Apartments on 122nd Avenue, will be for rent, rather than condos. Sunrise Apartments was heavily damaged by a March 2015 fire, putting about 100 people out of their rental apartments. The housing agreement applies to all 288 apartments and remains on ...

Aspen Heights project moves forward in Amherst

AMHERST — A large apartment complex proposed for Route 9 at the Amherst- Hadley town line continues to move through the permitting processes in both communities, even as some residents express worry about the size of the project and how it could impact their neighborhood. Amherst Planning Director Christine Brestrup said people have raised several issues with the 131- apartment Aspen Heights residential community in both written comments and orally at a Zoning Board of Appeals hearing earlier this month. One of the most prominent concerns, Brestrup said, is whether people who live at the proposed complex , to be built at 408 Northampton Road, will drive through the Greenleaves Retirement Community and Windfield Family and Senior Estates. Because Northampton Road is a divided highway, those living at Aspen Heights will have to exit the complex by taking a right, heading east, Brestrup said. To travel west toward the shopping malls, the roads through Greenleaves and Windfield migh...

Residents of Eastland apartments evicted

PORTLAND – The remaining low-income residents of rental units at the Eastland Park Hotel have 90 days to move out and make way for a major hotel renovation that could include a new ballroom in Congress Square Plaza . Eviction notices were sent to residents Monday. Earlier this month, about 12 tenants were still living in the hotel, said city spokeswoman Nicole Clegg . The notices came as no surprise since the hotel’s owner, Ohio- based RockBridge Capital , has been clear about its plan to convert about 50 low-income apartments into hotel guest rooms under the Westin Hotels name. The 90-day notice is 60 days longer than the residents’ leases require, said Adam Valente, senior vice president of RockBridge Capital, who noted that the investment group is making a significant donation to the city’s housing fund. The evictions will set in motion an overhaul of the 85-year-old hotel that Valente said will turn a “left-for-dead property” at a heavily traveled intersection into “a great sh...
