Washington Park apartment towers will rise to near-LoDo heights

DENVER -- A pair of apartment towers coming to Cherry Creek will be among the state’s tallest buildings outside of LoDo, the developer said this week. The two 30-story, 300-foot- tall structures  are slated for 1001 E. Bayud St., the current site of Country Club Gardens , the Denver Business Journal reported . The 501,000-square-foot structures will contain some 550 apartments, The Broe Group said. For comparison, The Curtis in LoDo stands 350 feet tall , while Republic Plaza is the tallest building in the Mountain States at 728 feet. About 20 percent of the existing 1940s-era apartments on the 6.5-acre parcel will be removed, according to the Business Journal . The remaining units will be updated. The project can likely go forward without any more public hearings. The builder got pre-approval for the towers some 12 years ago, according to the Business Journal . Olympia to revise codes to allow for a variety of housing

Whitney and Luke Bowerman dream of building cottages on one of the few larger lots remaining in Olympia’s Eastside neighborhood. They want to leave the existing trees on the Fairview Street Southeast lot , and reflect the character of the neighborhood in their design. The cottages would join a new, three-bedroom house also designed to fit the area. But the city of Olympia has made it expensive to build cottages, the Bowermans said. They estimate that city fees alone will run $30,000 to $40,000 per cottage. And the cottages will be just between 500 and 800 square feet. “The impact fees for a 500-square-foot cottage are almost the same as for a single-family home,” Whitney Bowerman said. “But you can’t rent them for as much,” Luke Bowerman said. If changes aren’t made to reduce the costs, the Bowermans said, they might have to abandon the cottage idea and build a more traditional subdivision. Out of respect for the neighborhood, they don’t want to do that. Meanwhile, Olympia is poised...

7 Things to Know About Having Small Dogs

Image
Growing up, I was a card-carrying lover of large canines. My 100- pound Terrier mix was great to go running with — and according to my parents, “ way more dog-like” than small dogs like Toy Poodles. But as I grew older, I realized that daily strolls and stressful vet visits with huskier hounds get somewhat exhausting. I also realized that streamlined, fuel- efficient cars weren ’t necessarily optimized for, say, Great Danes. So over the years I’ve parented, fostered, and absolutely adored a succession of progressively smaller dogs . Small-breed dogs are perfectly comfortable in condos and apartments, they don’t dominate the furniture and they’re easier to lift and carry in the event of illness or injury. One thing I’ve noticed, however, is that little dogs come with their own set of tricky tribulations: Cute Shih Tzu puppy on a couch." width="600" height="397" /> Cute Shih Tzu puppy . In SF politics, the action’s in District 6, a bellwether for rest of city

Image
Take a walk east from the gold-plated cupola of San Francisco City Hall and the landscape transforms into the Tenderloin, a patchwork of residential hotels, small delis and social service clinics that cater to the poor. It winds into the city’s main tourist corridor , and, farther along, a glossy cluster of condominium towers where upper- story penthouses cost millions . These symbols of extreme poverty and prosperity are wedged together in District Six, which serves both as a portal for visitors and a cauldron where San Francisco ’s most pressing political issues simmer . For 20 years, District Six voters have reliably concluded that the solutions to those issues come from the progressive viewpoint. And while it’s more than a year until the next election for supervisor, the contest is already shaping up as a test of whether that is still true. From the Tenderloin to the Mission Bay waterfront , District Six has seen a rush of development over the past two decades, and residents are ...
