4242 Cedar Springs, Douglas Park apartment complexes are almost gone — finally

end loader tears into the side of Douglas Park this afternoon." width="476" height="317" /> A front- end loader tears into the side of Douglas Park this afternoon. I’ve been trying unsuccessfully for several days to get in touch with Mark McHenry of The Lane Co. to get an update on the developer’s progress at the site of the old Douglas Park and 4242 Cedar Springs apartment complexes . These complexes have been vacant for about a year and a half, and demolition has seemingly started and stopped several times since then, with McHenry most recently telling me that it would be complete this summer . In any case, based on a quick visit to the site this afternoon, it looks like demolition is well under way again. The 4242 Cedar Springs complex is completely gone, and workers this afternoon were putting down erosion control material where the buildings stood (see below). Meanwhile, another worker was using a front-end loader to tear the brick facade off buil...

Nonprofit to develop affordable housing complex in Phoenix for c - 3TV

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) - Homeless advocates say gaps in affordable housing options continue to be an issue in parts of Arizona, but a local organization is trying to help answer the call with the development of a new complex that also emphasizes energy efficiency . UMOM New Day Centers, based in Phoenix, announced plans to develop a four-story apartment complex called “19 North” that can accommodate up to 54 families in need of affordable housing . The $16 million project will be built on a vacant lot near Morten and 19th avenues in Phoenix, and is expected to be completed in 2019. Michelle Ray knows all too well the impact of having affordable housing options after she hit a rough patch in her life about 9 years ago. She and her 18-month-old daughter needed a place to turn to in the face of limited options , so Ray reached out to UMOM for help. Ray said she doesn’t like to imagine what her life would be like if she didn’t find UMOM and affordable housing . “I know if it wasn’t for ...

New Haven candidates clash on housing, immigration

Image
Paul Bass | New Haven Independent Democrat Marcus Paca, left, and incumbent Mayor Toni Harp . Marcus Paca promised that if he becomes mayor, he will fight gentrification, while Mayor Toni Harp argued that the burst of market-rate housing in town doesn’t constitute gentrification. Harp promised to continue New Haven’s “sanctuary city” policies even if President Trump withholds federal grants , while Paca promised to take a closer look at the issue first to avoid losing needed dollars . Those differences between the two Democratic mayoral candidates emerged Sunday afternoon at their first debate, held before a full house in the sanctuary of Varick Memorial AME Zion Church on Dixwell Avenue. The event was billed as a “forum,” not a “debate.” But a debate it turned out to be, from the moment the two Democrats began fielding questions from a panel of three local ministers and passionately responded to each other’s positions in a fast-paced, issues-focused back and forth. Two- term incu...

Historic Fremont School to be renovated as upscale apartments - News - GoUpstate

Alyssa Mulliger Staff Writer @AMulligerSHJ An Albany, Ga.-based developer has plans to renovate the now- vacant Fremont School building near downtown Spartanburg to create 41 market-rate apartments. Pace Burt, the project’s developer, said the multimillion-dollar project will preserve the character and architectural integrity of the 102-year-old schoolhouse at 600 Magnolia St. while repurposing it for stylish apartments. “The project is going to be a historical renovation, so we will bring the building back to its original grandeur. There are beautiful columns and workmanship on the brick,” he said. “The apartments will be very upscale and have high ceilings, plenty of windows and original wooden floors .” The new apartments will consist of one- and two-bedroom units that will rent for around $850 and $1,000 per month, respectively, Burt said. The project includes onsite parking , landscaping and a fence that will make it a gated property. No n...

New real estate reporter tries to find an apartment in San Diego.

Image
I didn’t cry while searching for a San Diego apartment , but I came close. Moving to the city on a Sunday night, I had a five-day reservation at a Motel 6 and needed to find an apartment fast . I also had my 6-year-old tabby cat with me and a new job as real estate reporter for the San Diego Union -Tribune to start the next day. I was fairly confident I’d find a place quickly because in the last decade I had managed to get apartments in London, Chicago, San Francisco, New York City, rural New Jersey, Northeast Pennsylvania and, most recently, Monterey. Not only did San Diego turn out to be the most difficult, it made me change nearly everything I thought I wanted. My criteria was a one- bedroom apartment near the beach that allows cats, a rent of no more than $1,200 and was fairly close to work. To say the least, I stayed at the Motel 6 longer than expected. Ignorance of what neighborhood I was in most of the time was exacerbated only by a rental market that has seen prices increase...

Developer seeks to build affordable apartments on Bayshore Drive

Image
CLOSE Collier County will consider four public sites in East Naples and North Naples to encourage the development of affordable housing. Greg Stanley/Naples Daily News Credit: Andy Dean Photography via iStock (Photo: Andy Dean Photography via iStock) A developer wants to put up an apartment complex on Bayshore Drive and rent out nearly half of its units as affordable housing. The property, a vacant lot at the northeast corner of Bayshore and Thomasson drives, has been slated for affordable housing since 2005. But it has always been the county's plan for the East Naples site that the housing on it — either condominiums or single family homes — would be owned and not rented. In a 2005 agreement with the owners of the property, called the Cirrus Pointe Planned Unit Development , the county gave developers permission to build more units than is typically allowed in exchange for keeping 44 of those condos or homes affordable. We offer our predictions on communities that will rank among the city's most desirable in 2026. Plus a look at developers who are working to make those visions a reality. February 18, 2016 (page 7 of 7) 8 developers with insight who are rethinking our urban neighborhoods   BY DEBRA SMIT G reat neighborhoods — with ample green space , commerce and good housing stock — empower their residents to grow and prosper. Developers are key when it comes to weaving together the physical threads of a community, particularly in urban neighborhoods frayed by years of blight and decay. These are among the developers who are working to revitalize some of the city’s most challenged neighborhoods, striving to be restorers of streets in which to dwell. All have one eye, certainly, on the bottom line. Still, they are well aware of expectations that they give measured consideration to quality of life in the neighborhoods in which they build.   Wi...
