My Story: Former councilman on road to recovery | News

HUNTINGTON — For someone deep in the throes of an addiction to heroin or opioids, it's not that uncommon to end up in the news. What is uncommon is fighting that battle while already being a public figure, which means headlines a regular person might not get. Bernard Slater Jr ., resigned from Charleston City Council in April after a string of bad headlines that followed the length of his career as a public servant. "You go from being elected to city council to digging in people's dumpsters," Slater said. "That was my rock bottom right there. I had hit bottom long ago , but I didn't know rock bottom had a basement. After that, I didn't think nothing of it at the time until I sobered up and saw the headlines." Slater's first memories of drugs and alcohol are of getting beer for his uncles out of the refrigerator as they played poker. They would let him take the first drink. Then, at age 5, while at the beach, his uncles – teenagers at the time – ...

Transforming a suburban crossroads | Newsday

Change is coming to Hicksville. It may not come easily. It will take time, and the right combination of local leadership, private investment, community engagement, innovative thinking and, perhaps most important, a new Oyster Bay way. Most Popular But it is coming. The pieces of the puzzle that hopefully will bring new energy to downtown Hicksville have been slowly falling into place: the $ 121 million upgrade of the Long Island Rail Road ’s busiest station; renovations of the Hicksville athletic center and the once vibrant Broadway Mall ; and the repaving, cleanup and drain repair of Routes 106 and 107. And the recent approval of the third track expansion project will mean vastly improved LIRR service and the potential to lure workers to Hicksville businesses. Now, town and state officials are starting to fill in critical missing pieces that could turn this tired crossroads into a major hub with housing for younger adults starting out and older ones wanting to downsize, entert...

Police charge 2 with arson in Downtown fire

CINCINNATI -- Police say a pair of 20-year- olds set fires in an under- construction luxury apartment building overnight . Duncan Ray and Ryan Barnes got into the high-rise building between Eighth and Sycamore through a parking garage before setting fires in a bathroom and common area on two different floors, according to police. Both men appeared in court Wednesday morning , each charged with arson for one fire, though police said they're suspected of setting several others. The pair started setting fires on Court Street Downtown , according to police. They were targeting things like port-a-potties. Security cameras recorded them setting a fire in an alley outside the library. Katy Crossen with the Al Neyer Co. said the company is still hoping to keep construction of the luxury apartment building on schedule. "This does present an unexpected challenge," Crossen said. "We had hoped to deliver it early, and this presents another challenge we're going to work t...
