But the flamboyant local construction magnate with a ZZ Top beard still acquired the Register’s Santa Ana real estate , currently vacant after the publication decamped to Anaheim this spring. With the Register gone, Harrah is now embarking on an ambitious $1-billion plan for the 20- acre Grand Avenue site , proposing to build Orange County ’s tallest buildings, more than 1,000 residences, a 171-room hotel, offices and retail shops. In all, Harrah’s Caribou Industries envisions a 2.3-million-square- foot development known as 625IVE that serves as a gateway to historic downtown Santa Ana , where hip restaurants and shops are opening just a mile away. A West Seneca real estate developer was the winning bidder at the auction of a fully occupied Orchard Park apartment complex this week, offering to pay $5.65 million for the Provincetown Apartments. Young Development topped the bidding for the 71- unit apartment complex at 10-75 Provincetown Lane, which includes nine identical buildings. Including the 5 percent buyer’s premium, Young will pay $5.93 million, or $82,000 per unit. In all, 27 people presented deposits of $100,000 to register as participants, “so it was spirited bidding,” said auctioneer Cash Cunningham of Cash Realty & Auctions, which conducted the sale. The 112,536-square-foot complex, located on 9.1 acres, has 70 two-bedroom units and one four-bedroom unit. Pace Burt, the project’s developer, said the multimillion-dollar project will preserve the character and architectural integrity of the 102-year-old schoolhouse at 600 Magnolia St. while repurposing it for stylish apartments. “The project is going to be a historical renovation, so we will bring the building back to its original grandeur. There are beautiful columns and workmanship on the brick,” he said. “The apartments will be very upscale and have high ceilings, plenty of windows and original wooden floors .” The new apartments will consist of one- and two-bedroom units that will rent for around $850 and $1,000 per month, respectively, Burt said. The Orchard Park apartment complex will be demolished this summer, to be replaced by new apartments for students with families by fall 2020. UC Davis will issue a request for proposals seeking bids for a new family living apartment complex in May. Key criteria in the RFP will be affordability, quality of life and facility design.
