Nearly 200 residents at Mirabella apartment complex without water

PHOENIX - Nearly 200 residents at the Mirabella Apartment complex in Phoenix have been without water for days. That is until late Thursday night when Phoenix Fire Department spokesperson Benjamin Santillan told ABC15 the city agreed to turn the water back on for a week. The water company says the complex near the I-17 and Camelback owes them about $50,000 dollars, and until the bill is paid, the residents are stuck in the middle. "I think this is crazy. Everyone is very emotional, we don't know when this will end or if we'll have to go without water every day," said Crystal Medina who called ABC15 for help. When our crews arrived they found some fed up residents standing outside. They've been dealing with no water for two days. "It's terrible. I have to go to work, but we can't shower, we can't use the toilets, we can't even clean," said new resident Ira Savely . Savely and his roommate just moved into the apartment days ago , unaware ...

Some forced to move as Ann Arbor-area apartments transition from affordable to market rate

Image
Megan Mishler has lost her sense of security. Mishler, who has a rare genetic condition called Ehlers -Danlos Syndrome that prevents her from working, was recently forced to move from her apartment just west of Ann Arbor because her landlord is transitioning from affordable housing to market rate. Mishler is not alone; the transition will impact 144 units at the 368- unit Woodchase apartment complex at 1100 Rabbit Run Circle in Scio Township. “This has been extremely, extremely difficult. I was almost paralyzed at first,” Mishler said, referring to when she learned she would have to move. “This just added a whole other layer on top of all the other stuff that I’m already dealing with.” Mishler was told the rent for her one-bedroom apartment would jump from $770 per month to about $1,200 per month at the end of her lease term. The Woodchase apartments in Scio Township were developed in 1998. Katie McLean | The Ann Arbor News   Mishler uses the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Progr...

West Deptford revokes three certificates of occupancy at Forest Creek apartments

Image
WEST DEPTFORD TWP. – Chronic roof leaks and at least one ceiling collapse have led township officials to revoke three certificates of occupancy at the Forest Creek apartment complex . Residents of the second floor of the apartment complex near Jessup Road have, since last November in some cases, been complaining of regular leaks in their ceiling. Tisa Davenport was in her sixth year living at Forest Creek when a new leak spouted last January. “It was a regular thing, and it’s like you just know the routine at that point,” said Davenport, 33. “The response from management has always been you poke a hole in the ceiling, you get a bucket and you wait for roof repair. But I had three leaks this year and on Feb. 10 or 11, my ceiling collapsed.” Looking into the crater in her ceiling, Davenport reported seeing mold. Her apartment and two others have been deemed uninhabitable, following inspections from West Deptford code enforcement official Mark Hallahan . “It’s the smell of it that rea...

Blotter: Suspects in Aubrey home invasion plead guilty to federal hate crimes | News

Cottle's jury trial started Monday in Judge Brody Shanklin 's 211th Judicial District Court, according to First Assistant District Attorney Jamie Beck . On Wednesday, after the victim and several witnesses testified, he decided to change his plea to guilty, she said. The case went to the judge for sentencing later that afternoon. The incident started in 2009, when Cottle's daughter was 6 years old. Beck said Cottle lived alone at his home in the 100 block of High School Drive in Lewisville, and his daughter would visit him on weekends and one week in the summer. He sexually abused her for years until she told authorities at the age of 13, Beck said. The girl was interviewed at the Children's Advocacy Center for Denton County in Lewisville, and Lewisville police eventually arrested Cottle .  Other reports 600 block of Fallmeadow Court —  Police did not make any arrests Tuesday after a 48-year-old woman said her neighbor hit her with a door so hard she threw up. Georgette Braun: Forest Glen an affordable-housing inspiration in Rockford - News - Rockford Register Star

By Georgette BraunRockford Register Star Forest Glen's name has been popping up in conversations the past few months among movers and shakers in Rockford. They're saying the 140- unit apartment complex near McFarland Road and East Riverside Boulevard — with a swimming pool, tennis courts, garages and manicured landscaping, as well as comparatively little crime surrounding it — is a good example of what affordable housing should be: 56 units are set aside for income-restricted renters.  The talk about Forest Glen Apartments has been fueled by a plan that was pulled back last week by a Wisconsin-based developer to build 65 apartments in east Rockford off South New Towne Drive. Eighty-eight percent would be for low-income renters. The plan called for housing about 150 residents, most from the 650- resident Fairgrounds Valley , a decaying property on the west side that the Rockford Housing Authority wants to raze. The 210-unit complex is 47 years old. Residents of the New T...
