Crews start asbestos abatement work at former Woodhaven site

Asbestos abatement has begun at the former Woodhaven apartment complex , and demolition of the housing there could begin as soon as next week, according to city Public Works Commissioner Butch Conover .The contractor for the project, Bronze Contracting of Remsen, is first dealing with asbestos and will then be able to safely demolish the buildings. After the demolition, all that will remain of the 136 structures at the former apartment complex on Park Drive will be the concrete slabs they were built on.The project’s end date is Nov. 22, but Conover said the work will likely be done by October. The demolition work will be done during normal business hours on weekdays, so neighbors will not have to deal with the associated noise at night or on weekends, he noted.Conover also said the work “should have no effect” on the use of the back entrance to Rome Free Academy off Park Drive because crews will handle demolition on that side first, before school opens for the fall. The contract for...

Aug 22, 2017 Most of the stars on HGTV — a network so popular it beat CNN's ratings during an election year — lean toward a look that, well, blends in. Crown jewel Joanna Gaines of Fixer Upper is often seen in denim, plaid and baseball caps to match the Waco, Texas, scenery. Love It or List It 's Hilary Farr is almost always wearing jeans and a plain, bright sweater or blouse. Karen Laine and daughter Mina Starsiak of HGTV's new show Good Bones also favor simple plaids and neutrals. Christina El Moussa from Flip or Flop , HGTV's second most popular show after Fixer Upper , will sometimes wear a conservative blouse or drapey sweater on-camera, but she'll also pair them with ripped jeans or visit demolition day in form- fitting yoga pants . She's hardly ever without a blowout and brown smokey eyeshadow . She stands out and gets noticed — but with that must come a thick skin. More homes and yet more homes are going in, with new communities popping up . A Globe Trotting Family Settles Down in a California Spanish Colonial

Name: Fernando, Roberta and their 1 year old son Location: Pasadena, California The basics: 1 year, owned — 2,200 square feet After time in Switzerland, the UK and Seattle, Fernando and Roberta found themselves in Pasadena hunting for a home. A design enthusiast, Fernando jumped at the opportunity to remodel a basically untouched Spanish Colonial home in a perfect location. Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: My wife Roberta and I bought the house a little more than a year ago. We were relocating from Seattle to Pasadena, as we were both going to work at Caltech. I'm a professor of theoretical physics there and she is a human resource consultant . We are both originally from Brazil, and we lived in London for seven years and in Zurich for one year before moving to Seattle. I have always had a passion for interior design, and whenever I can I like to give it a try. I designed the remodel of our apartment in Brazil five years ago and I was...
