Springfield, MO A new apartment complex will provide a way for people to rebuild their lives following domestic violence situations . Named "Talia," the community on South Scenic near Grand Street isn 't just another new housing complex . Half the units will be for women (and their children) escaping violent home situations . "Unfortunately, a lot of them don't make it long term because the options are not all that great," said Lisa Farmer, Director of Harmony House. EL CENTRO, Calif. — Seated at a kitchen table in a cramped apartment, Rosendo Gil asked the young parents sitting across from him what they should do if their daughter caught a cold. Blas Lopez, 29, and his fiancĂ©e, Lluvia Padilla, 28, quickly answered: Check her temperature and call the doctor if she has a fever they can’t control. “I’m very proud of both of you knowing what to do,” Gil said, as 3-year-old Leilanie Lopez played with a pretend kitchen nearby . Padilla recalled that when Leilanie was born, they would not have known the answer. “We were asking question after question after question,” she said. Gil, a family support worker with the Imperial County Home Visiting Program , has visited the family dozens of times since Leilanie’s birth. Each time, Gil teaches them a little more about child development and helps them cope with the stresses of work, school, relationships and parenting. This story also ran on NPR. It can be republished for free (details). Home visitors aroun...

A day earlier Orlando police responded around 3 p.m. to Willow Bend Apartments after someone reported seeing a possible placenta in the parking lot. Homicide and crime- scene investigators determined "that a full term baby had been born and discarded," police said. Officers found the mother, 30-year-old Susan Richardson, on Monday but no baby. She only admitted to giving birth to the girl, according to police. Richardson was taken to the Orange County Jail on an aggravated child neglect charge Tuesday afternoon , police say. Police conducted an extensive search of the complex in the 4700 block of Silver Star Road near Evans High School — including inside Dumpsters and trash cans — with cadaver dogs and 14 trained searchers from the nonprofit support group Search and Rescue of Central Florida but came up emp...
