The Sturgis Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony welcoming Dane Goetz and Cody Byrum, owners of the Sierra Vista Apartment complex constructed on Ball Park road . "It goes back two years when a local banker that is involved in economic development called and asked if we would be interested in building housing in Sturgis" said Goetz. After a tour of Sturgis and viewing different options Goetz said "with the help of the City and Economic Development Corporation , we decided to come to Sturgis and build on Ball Park Road ," The current site has three acres and would accommodate a total of 48 units. The overall master plan is to build one complex per year and with the current occupancy it would appear plans would move forward with another 16 units in 2016. Two years ago, developer Mike Harrah joined a bid to purchase the Orange County Register out of bankruptcy. The effort ultimately failed . But the flamboyant local construction magnate with a ZZ Top beard still acquired the Register’s Santa Ana real estate , currently vacant after the publication decamped to Anaheim this spring. With the Register gone, Harrah is now embarking on an ambitious $1-billion plan for the 20- acre Grand Avenue site , proposing to build Orange County ’s tallest buildings, more than 1,000 residences, a 171-room hotel, offices and retail shops. In all, Harrah’s Caribou Industries envisions a 2.3-million-square- foot development known as 625IVE that serves as a gateway to historic downtown Santa Ana , where hip restaurants and shops are opening just a mile away. A shortage of skilled labor and rising lumber costs prompted Thompson Thrift to shelve a planned $28 million, 232- unit expansion of Sycamore Terrace apartments , off New Margaret Drive, according to Paul Thrift, company president. And, after an initial start date set for earlier this year, Carmel- based Mainstreet Student Living is now looking to begin construction in April on a $20 million, 162-unit complex near Union Hospital with completion in August 2019. Private yards, a man cave, a dog park and Package Concierge are a few of the amenities that will be offered at The Julian at South Pointe apartment complex . The 436-unit complex will lease for $1.49 a square foot when it opens in 2018, said Kim McCaslin, vice president of MR Development. Pre-leasing will start by the end of 2017. The City Council unanimously approved the detailed site plan for the project at its Monday meeting. The apartments are proposed on Harmon and Lowe roads. Only 36 percent of the units will be two bedrooms. The remainder will be one bedroom. No three-bedroom units are proposed. McCaslin said they wanted to offer new amenities at this complex that they don’t offer at the Villagio Apartments on Debbie Lane. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- A Lyndhurst hotel and a pair of projects that will bring nearly 500 apartments to Cleveland won financing support Tuesday from the Cleveland- Cuyahoga County Port Authority . The port's board signed off on nearly $200 million in real estate- related bond transactions , setting the stage for construction to start within months on a trio of projects. The agency acts as a conduit for development financing, issuing bonds and helping to structure deals that involve longer terms , lower interest rates or cheaper construction materials than a borrower might find in the private market. Tuesday's headline deals were: A  Hyatt Place hotel and a 355- space parking garage at the Legacy Village shopping center in Lyndhurst.
