NEW YORK CITY is all about connections. In a city overflowing with ambitious young singles , there is a dating pool full of professionals with the keys to unlock unlimited doors . IG Influencer/Blogger The food scene in NYC is one of the best in the world. There are restaurants that cost upwards of $600/head for a meal, restaurants where you’ll wait over a year to get a table and restaurants that are so underground, you’ll likely never hear of them (unless you have an in). Apparently, it is an awful idea to date a chef, since they’re married to their work, so, how do you get into Manhattan’s top restaurants? Instagram Influencers. I know this Influencer who runs a food blog and popular Instagram account . His follower count alone gets him invites to top restaurants, sometimes for private dinners before they have even opened, where the che...

Crews start asbestos abatement work at former Woodhaven site

Asbestos abatement has begun at the former Woodhaven apartment complex , and demolition of the housing there could begin as soon as next week, according to city Public Works Commissioner Butch Conover .The contractor for the project, Bronze Contracting of Remsen, is first dealing with asbestos and will then be able to safely demolish the buildings. After the demolition, all that will remain of the 136 structures at the former apartment complex on Park Drive will be the concrete slabs they were built on.The project’s end date is Nov. 22, but Conover said the work will likely be done by October. The demolition work will be done during normal business hours on weekdays, so neighbors will not have to deal with the associated noise at night or on weekends, he noted.Conover also said the work “should have no effect” on the use of the back entrance to Rome Free Academy off Park Drive because crews will handle demolition on that side first, before school opens for the fall. The contract for...

Corbella: $4,000 Enmax water bill has family drowning in difficulty

Verginia Ghobrial-Said feels as though City Hall is stealing from her and her family. It’s hard to blame her. In May, she and her husband Ramez Said received their utility bill from Enmax for a whopping $4,070.44. More than $3,800 of that bill is for water that Vergina says her family never used. The 31-year-old investment adviser assistant says she received the usual email from Enmax one morning, informing her that her bill for May 15 was available. When she opened it, however, she was shocked. “I was on my way to work when I read the amount on my phone and it was $4,000,” she said. “I thought it must have been an error, but I was getting fast heartbeats until I could phone Enmax at 8:30 a.m. I had two hours of severe anxiety.” Those two hours have turned into four months of tears and frustration with Enmax and Calgary’s Water Services, with no satisfactory resolution for the young couple and their 14-month-old son, Sebastian, other than a huge bill they must pay or have their water ...

I Trained Like a UFC Fighter and It Was the Most Insane Workout of My Life

Image
© Provided by TIME Inc. My typical week of workouts typically means a couple of spin classes along with a weight-training day and the occasional yoga session . Being bored while sweating is my biggest exercise turn -off, which is why I love to mix things up in terms of style and intensity. So when I had the chance to try a Daily Ultimate Training (DUT) class at a UFC Gym in New York City, I thought, why not? If you're unfamiliar with DUT, I can tell you that this workout lives up to its name, that's for sure. The boot camp–style class involves an active warmup followed by a circuit of exercises that test your stamina, agility, and core strength. "These types of workouts replicate the pace of a fight and provide the conditioning to build the best structural foundation for [a fighter's] body to prevent pain and push them to their pinnacle both in and outside the octagon," explained Javier Lee , training manager at UFC Gym SoHo, in an email to Health . How to Make Friends in College: A Comprehensive Guide

Image
Do you remember the first friend you made? The first person I consciously remember calling my “friend” (and later, “best friend”) was someone I met in preschool. I was probably four years old. We had similar interests, and complementary personalities (he was the big picture idea guy , I was the detail-oriented do-er). As I’ve continued through life, my friendships have shifted . I’ve made new friends along the way, deepened my relationship with existing friend s, and fallen out of touch with others. When you look at it this way, it seems like friendship is something that just “happens. ” You can’t control it, it would seem, and maybe it’s better not to. After all, you can’t force friendship. Yet, what I’ve come to realize in the past couple years is that while you can’t force or manufacture friendship, you can   seek and cultivate it . It isn’t completely out of your control. In fact, since it’s such an important part of living a happy life, it’s something that you put on autopilot a...
