While Hokies are away, construction is in full swing | News

Image
Maybe you used your summer vacation to relax with a nonalcoholic drink in your hand on a warm sunny beach . But back in Blacksburg, construction workers did not have that luxury. While you were sipping pina coladas and getting caught in the rain, they were working on major renovations across campus, from the Upper Quad to Sandy Hall. Demolition started in June on Thomas and Monteith halls, two aging Corps of Cadets residence halls on the Upper Quad. Several years ago, they complemented Brodie and Rasche halls to house the Corps. Brodie and Rasche were razed June 2015 and November 2013, respectively. Since then, the aging brick buildings have been replaced by two new, Hokie Stone- clad residence halls . Pearson Hall opened in November 2015 after significant construction delays , contributing to a housing crunch on campus. Its sibling building, known only as New Cadet Hall, will house cadets for the first time this fall. This summer, construction crews worked on finishing a set of n...

(Ricky Carioti/The Washington Post) Four years ago, when her apartment building at 1921 Kalorama Road NW in Washington was up for sale, Natalie Marra, a resident for more than 30 years, was determined to stay in the home she loves. “It took almost two years of tough negotiating, but there was a core group of seven of us in the tenant association that worked with a lawyer to make sure our rights were protected,” Marra says. “We negotiated the right to live in our apartments under rent control for the rest of our lives. Believe me, none of us ever plan to move now. Why would we? We have great renovated apartments and low rent.” Marra and her neighbors benefited from the Tenant Opportunity to Purchase Act (TOPA), a provision in the District that provides strong protection for tenants to avoid a forced move. In the ’90s, We Had ‘Friends.’ Now They Call It Co-Living.

Image
More prosaically, co-living can simply mean roommates and common rooms, like a dorm. For some developers, it’s a form of adaptive reuse: many co-living sites, like WeLive at 110 Wall Street , are leased, in this case from the landlord of what once was an office building, drained of its tenants by Hurricane Sandy. Slide Show Adventures in Co-Living Credit Photographs by Andrew White for The New York Times There are still co-living evangelists, like Brad Hargreaves of Common, who has promised that “the genuine and organic relationships our members build with each other,” as he wrote in a post for Medium, would not be tainted by allowing journalists to sleep over at Common properties (though they were welcome to tour). With over $23 million in financing, Common now operates in five cities, including out of eight houses in New York City. Some co-living ventures have collapsed under the weight of their ideals, like the utopian Pure House , started by Ryan Fix, now 42, in his Williamsburg l...
