Before & After: A Dismal Office Space Gets a New Look

Amanda's office was unsensational, to say the least. Dark, dreary and lacking a look, she wanted to give the space a homier and more polished look. The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase. Brooklinen Moving is a stressful experience no matter how you slice it, and taking on the job of finding and outfitting your first apartment as an adult is even more so. Your first apartment is a perfect storm: an intersection of many needs and low resources. Chances are high that your college roommate might have bought the kitchen utensils ... or the vacuum... or the pots and pans...  and now you’re trying to furnish an entire apartment on your own with less money than it seems the job will demand. The few purchases you do make will need to last you longer than the cheap, seasonal models you bought in college so you’re not in the same spot, dumping more money into a dresser next year. You’ll likely want nicer belongings than plastic storage bins for all of your clothes as an adult now, anyway. Since it's unlikely y...

Boca developer has grand plan for West Palm Beach land near Northwood

Offices, a grocery store and “micro-condominiums” might soon rise out of the ground on a prime piece of land in West Palm Beach west of Northwood Village. These are the first projects that Boca Raton-developer Mario Caprini wants to build as part of an ambitious $70 million complex dubbed Northwood Common s, on a 3.5- acre parcel owned by the West Palm Beach Community Redevelopment Agency . Can Caprini get the job done? His company’s website lists his prior development work in Canada and Ohio, including 1,000 residential units, 5 million square feet of industrial parks and “hundreds of thousands” of square feet of office, retail and medical buildings. In South Florida, Caprini recently completed construction of a “green” home in Pompano Beach at 4620 N.W. 18th Ave. The project, dubbed Modernista, was recognized by the mayor of Pompano Beach in March and won a national award in February from the Structural Insulated Panel Association , earning first place in the affordable housing...

Affordable, Unsubsidized Housing Planned for Near West Oakland BART

Panoramic Interests is the developer who recently revised it’s design for 1,031 apartment units to be built near West Oakland BART (1). Previously, the plans called for 1,400 units, but was changed to 1,031 units by removing all of the one-bedrooms, and all but two studio apartments from the plans. Other interesting facts about the revised design include removing all luxury amenities such as gyms, pet spas and chef kitchens. Also removed from the floor plans are any empty corridors, to make most efficient use of the space to provide affordable, unsubsidized housing near a transportation hub. Also, no parking is provided for the complex, just seven spaces for car-sharing and deliveries. So occupants will be relying on public transit and car services. This is certainly a design for the post-modern era that should please the millennials. The estimated rents will be around $2,500 for 2 bedrooms and about $3,500 for a 4 bedroom unit. Instead of luxury amenities, the complex will include 2...

Variable fonts give us a new, wide open typographic space with which to work. Instead of prescribing value to individual UI elements in a vacuum, we should take a hybrid and calculated approach to variable font interfaces . How do we structure our design tools to adapt to the new advantages variable fonts provide us with?
