ICYMI: Al Capone’s Park Slope Home Is For Sale

Image
PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN — If you've ever wanted to live in the old Brooklyn home of a notorious gangster, you've got a chance to do it. The Park Slope home where Al Capone used to live is up for sale, and it will only cost you a cool $2.5 million to move in. Capone grew up in a nearby building on Garfield Place, according to realtor.com, and moved into this listing in the early 1900s. "If he had lived here today, he wouldn’t have to go into the rum-running business," listing agent Bren Salamon told Patch . That's because Capone could make some serious dough from the two rental units attached to the condo, which could bring in a pretty penny in 2017 Park Slope . Anyone who moves in, though, won't be looking at any old relics of Brooklyn gone by. The home, as many are in the borough these days, was completely renovated by an investor about a year ago. The main townhouse is 2, 980 square feet spread over two levels. Along with three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, t...

the latest London skyscraper on the cityscape

Image
One Park Drive is the latest addition to the London skyline – an eye-catching skyscraper from the architects behind the Tate Modern extension . At 58 storeys high, it will be one of the tallest residential towers in London. So views from the building will be out of this world. The stunning skyscraper will enjoy a waterfront location in Canary Wharf. And while residents on the lower floors may not benefit from city views, they’ll still enjoy their spot overlooking the dock. Read more: Five new buildings have been granted listed status , including a London cabbie’s shelter and a ‘hobbit house’ The cylindrical building will be architecturally impressive. Circular towers are rare due to the challenges they pose to architects and interior designers , but  Architects Herzog & de Meuron have risen to the challenge and designed the building using an intelligent internal grid system . The grid system means that rooms aren’t awkwardly curved, as you might expect from a cylindrical tower, b...

Woodside Village apartment project moving forward

The $ 79 million Woodside Village project , a redevelopment plan that will add hundreds of apartments and retail space to Westwood, is underway more than two years after receiving city approval for tax breaks. The project being built by Los Angeles-based Tanner & White is a big addition to Westwood, a small (pop. 1,500) inner-ring suburb in northeast Johnson County . Its City Council authorized up to $20 million in tax incentives to subsidize the project in late 2011. Developer Blair Tanner said it took a while to arrange the financing and coordinate the project with improvements made to the Woodside Health and Tennis Club, but work is beginning this week. The $26 million first phase calls for a four-story building with 91 luxury apartments on the upper floors and 20,000 square feet of retail space on the first level. It will be on the site of the former Youthfront building at 4715 Rainbow Blvd. Demolition of that structure is scheduled to begin in August. “We like the project ...

Can You Afford to Live in NYC?

Is NYC going through an affordable housing crisis ? To get a better understanding of the city’s rental market, RentHop compared median rents for a two-bedroom apartment in various parts of the city to the most recent median income data available at the neighborhood level. It turns out that just nine out of the 139 neighborhoods included in the study had median asking rents that could be afforded with 35 percent of the neighborhood’s median income. RentHop added an additional 5 percent to the recommended affordability of 30 percent to make room for the income growth that has taken place since the Census data was released. The map above shows the median asking rent of two-bedroom apartments in neighborhood tabulation areas (NTAs) across New York City and how that relates to the income of those neighborhoods. Darker shades of red indicate lower affordability , while the few green areas indicate that median asking rents are within reach for the neighborhood’s median household income . M...

Aurora council agrees to delay restaurant at The Mayan

The Aurora City Council has agreed to delay any restaurant development in the former Elks Club building at Stolp Avenue and Benton Street downtown . Aldermen unanimously approved an amendment to the development agreement between the city and Karademas Management that says for the time being, the developer of what is now known as The Mayan luxury apartments does not need to develop a restaurant in the first floor of the building. The original agreement between the city and Karademas called for Karademas to remodel the historic building into apartments, and to include a restaurant as part of the renovation. The city, which had taken ownership of the historic building, gave Karademas ownership of the building for $1. In return, Karademas put up a $500,000 performance bond as assurance he would complete the project. The apartments have been remodeled, and 26 of the 29 units currently are occupied. As he has been working on the project, Karademas has said there was no interest from a r...
