South Sudan says no hint that dead American was a journalist
Richmond County Sheriff’s Richard Roundtree and his deputies were out in force Thursday trying to ease concerns of River Glen Apartment after recent violent incidents, as part of “Operation No One Wins”.
“Over the last year, it’s been a roller coaster, up and down. Sometimes, we have our good moments. Sometimes we have our bad moments,” said River Glen Apartments resident Michelle Mapp.
Mapp has lived at River Glen Apartments for more than a year. Thursday afternoon, the Augusta mother talked with Richmond County Sheriff’s Office deputies about some of the problems she’s facing at the apartment complex.
“About a couple of weeks ago, I had a bullet come above my window and a couple of inches down, that could have been me because it was me and my daughter sitting on the couch,” Mapp said.
That’s why Sheriff Richard Roundtree wants to make sure that Mapp and the other River Glen residents no longer have to worry about the violence. He met with tenants to get a better understanding of what they’re going through.
“Tell them that they’re not in this by themselves. We are aware of their plight, aware of their challenges. And, me being the head of this agency, for me to come out, I want them to know that’s how important it is to me,” Sheriff Roundtree said.
Deputies have concerns that too many crimes happen in River Glen without the Sheriff’s Office or 911 being called.
Sheriff Roundtree says tenants may be afraid to call the police. “I think, over time, that that culture has been that way and I’ve told people several times, as long as that culture exists, then the bad guy wins, the criminal element wins,” he said.
Mapp says she’s happy to see that Roundtree and his deputies are concerned about them, and she’s hoping the police presence will keep the bad guys out of her neighborhood. “I’m from Connecticut and a lot of people that I talk to, they say, ‘oh, where do you live at?’ ‘I live at River Glen.’ ‘Oh, River Glen? I’m not coming down there. I’m not coming down there,’ but it’s not so much the people that live in River Glen,” she told us.
Sheriff Roundtree is encouraging all people in Richmond County that if you see a crime or know something that could solve a crime, please call 911 or the Sheriff’s Office. Their phone number is 706-821-1080.
