Man in Grand Forks standoff confirmed dead


GRAND FORKS, N.D. (Valley News Live) UPDATE (2 a.m.) Grand Forks Police confirm a man who was the subject of a standoff Monday night is dead.

Officers got a call around 7:30 p.m. about a suicidal male in the 2400 block of 36th Avenue South.

Upon arrival, officers located a male in his apartment in possession of a rifle.

Police backed out and set up a perimeter around the apartment and attempted to communicate with the man, but all attempts were unsuccessful.

The Grand Forks Regional SWAT Team, the Grand Forks Regional Crisis Negotiations Team and the Grand Forks Regional Bomb Team were activated.

The Crisis Negotiations Team was not able to establish communications with the man.

SWAT deployed a flash bang outside of the apartment building in order to initiate a response from the male and to determine whether or not he was still inside, but received no response.

They then deployed a robot inside and found the man deceased.

The investigation remains open and active and anyone with any information is asked to call the police department at (701) 787-8000.

UPDATE (12 a.m.) Negotiators left the scene around 11:30 and Valley News Live is waiting on official word fro authorities about the final outcome of the situation.

UPDATE (11 p.m.) Shortly after 10:30 p.m. witnesses on the scene reported hearing a loud "bang" coming out of the apartment. But so far police have not said what that sound was.

UPDATE (10 p.m.): We're learning more about the man that neighbors believe is involved in this situation. One woman living in the area tells Valley News Live that she believes the man involved has a military background.

Police have evacuated people from the Autumn Ridge apartment building, telling them the man they are trying to contact is on the second floor. They are also asking that everyone avoid the area near 36th Avenue South by Sam's Club and Walmart.

Authorities are attempting to make contact with the man, but say that it could take awhile.

We have a crew on scene and will continue to watch the situation.

ORIGINAL STORY: Law enforcement is on scene dealing with a situation involving a man possibly having a gun.

Police were called to the Autumn Ridge apartments located on 36th Avenue South in Grand Forks.

The original call was for a welfare check, before police began evacuating the apartment due to the possibility of there being a weapon involved.

Police ask that residents stay away from the area, and that people who live in the area should shelter in place.

There is a SWAT unit on scene.
