San Francisco Supervisor Aaron Peskin has asked the city attorney to explore legislation to impose a vacancy tax on large property owners who leave residential and commercial buildings empty . During a supervisors meeting this month, Peskin said he continues to receive complaints about the impact of “ghost buildings” on neighborhoods. The problem is, nobody really knows how many vacant homes there are in the city and whether a vacancy tax would be legal or effective in freeing up much-needed housing. In an interview, Peskin cited a 28- unit apartment building at 1656 Powell St. that was vacated after a fire damaged some units in December 2013. It remains empty. The three-story building is in a prime North Beach location across from Washington Square Park . A fire broke out at a west Edmonton apartment complex Thursday morning in the Callingwood area, where crews arrived  to find some residents on their balconies. Edmonton Fire Rescue said 40 firefighters were called to the Westridge Estates B apartment complex at 7611-172 St. just after 8 a.m. and arrived on scene within five minutes.The fire began in a third floor suite and quickly spread. Jeff Malachowski Daily News Staff @JMalachowskiMW MARLBOROUGH – Firefighters quickly put out a blaze inside an unoccupied residence at the Royal Crest apartments Tuesday afternoon , mostly limiting the damage to that one apartment, said Fire Chief Kevin Breen . A resident of the apartment complex called 911 after seeing smoke emanating from a third-floor balcony of one of the residential buildings at the facility around 12:45 p.m., said Breen. Fire crews arrived moments later and encountered heavy smoke and fire. Firefighters immediately began an aggressive outside attack on the blaze and were able to quickly put it out, said Breen. The apartment was empty, which aided crews in containing the fire to the apartment. Breen said if there had been furniture and other materials in the apartment, the fire could have spread and the damage could have been much worse. “The fire was just ready to break from the area of origin,” said Breen. “We were very fortunate.” The apartment ...

Residents have begun moving into the River House, a two- building apartment complex at 1785 N. Water St. consisting of 243 units. Developed by Atlanta- based Atlantic Realty Partners , the project marks the first entry into the city for the firm founded by two brothers originally from Whitefish Bay. The company, which has developed approximately 8,000 rental units across the country, has a handful of other developments in the Milwaukee area , including a cluster of buildings on W.
