Bronx affordable housing megaproject along Sheridan Expressway makes progress

In early 2013, a group of developers announced plans to move forward with the redevelopment of a stretch of industrial buildings along the Sheridan Expressway in the Bronx, into a massive affordable housing complex . Since then, four buildings of a total eight have been built as part of this megaproject. This week, developers filed plans for a fifth building, The Real Deal reports. This new building will be located at 1560 Boone Avenue, stand 16-stories tall, and bring 366 apartments to the neighborhood. The first two buildings that opened at the megaproject in November last year had a total of 237 apartments and were open to New Yorkers making between $28,835 and $52,389 annually. The project, known as Compass Residences, is a collaboration between Monadnock Construction, Signature Urban Properties and GTIS Partners. It will eventually bring over 1, 300 affordable apartments to the Crotona Park East and West Farm neighborhoods , in the Bronx. When it was announced in 2012, plan...

Highland IL approves liquor license for video gaming cafe

If plans work out, the city will be gaining a new restaurant called the Spin-N-Win Cafe. During its meeting Aug. 7, the Highland City Council voted to increase the number of class D2 liquor licenses from 10 to 11 permits. A D2 license allows restaurants to operate video gaming terminals . The council also approved the issuance of the additional license to Surjuit “Sunny” Tut, the owner of Tut Properties Inc. and Highland Liquor and Food Mart, located at 201 Walnut St. In a letter to Mayor Joe Michaelis , Tut said he is in the process of negotiating with a chain food service provider in hopes of opening a restaurant called the Spin-N-Win Cafe. Tut said he originally wanted to open the restaurant out of his existing business. But he decided it would not provide enough space, so instead he purchased a property at 213 Walnut St. with the intent of tearing down a dilapidated home and garage on the property. He said the plan is to construct a new structure for a restaurant. The restaura...

The Defenders: Complete Marvel Universe Easter Eggs and Reference Guide

Image
This article contains nothing but major spoilers for Marvel's The Defender s. If you'd prefer a spoiler free review of the series, click here. So I have to say, I’m a little surprised by The Defenders . While the show is an excellent return to form for Marvel's stable of Netflix shows, it's surprisingly light on Marvel Comics mythology . That's not necessarily a bad thing (we don't need easter eggs in every single scene), but given how jam-packed every other season of the Marvel Netflix shows was, I expected a little more. Then again, with all the world building they did in five other seasons of TV, I guess I can kind of understand why this is the way it is. Anyway, I'm here (as usual) to break down all the cool Marvel stuff hiding in the margins, and hopefully to make your viewing experience a little more fun. But guess what? I need your help. I can't do this alone! So if you spot anything that I missed (and I get the feeling I missed an awful lot t...

Affordable, Unsubsidized Housing Planned for Near West Oakland BART

Panoramic Interests is the developer who recently revised it’s design for 1,031 apartment units to be built near West Oakland BART (1). Previously, the plans called for 1,400 units, but was changed to 1,031 units by removing all of the one-bedrooms, and all but two studio apartments from the plans. Other interesting facts about the revised design include removing all luxury amenities such as gyms, pet spas and chef kitchens. Also removed from the floor plans are any empty corridors, to make most efficient use of the space to provide affordable, unsubsidized housing near a transportation hub. Also, no parking is provided for the complex, just seven spaces for car-sharing and deliveries. So occupants will be relying on public transit and car services. This is certainly a design for the post-modern era that should please the millennials. The estimated rents will be around $2,500 for 2 bedrooms and about $3,500 for a 4 bedroom unit. Instead of luxury amenities, the complex will include 2...
