MLive.com File Photo   JACKSON, MI - An apartment fire claimed the lives of four pets and displaced two residents Sunday night . The fire broke out at about 9:30 p.m., Aug. 13, inside the apartment at Abbey Villas Apartments , 308 Van Buran St ., said Jackson firefighter Joe Smith . Firefighters were able to control and isolate the blaze to the single unit, sparing 40 adjacent units , Smith said. Two dogs and two cats were killed and two residents were displaced in the blaze, which rendered the apartment uninhabitable , Smith said. There were no injures reported. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Update: Investigators suspect arson in Stonebrook Apartments fire GRAND RAPIDS — Residents fled to safety Sunday night as firefighters were able to quickly put out a fire that caused extensive damage to an apartment on the city’s Northeast Side. The fire department was called to the Stonebrook Apartments , off Plymouth Avenue NE between Michigan and Leonard streets, just after 10:30 pm. Smoke was reported coming from the apartment when the first units arrived. Apartment residents were out of the building before fire units arrived . No one was injured. The American Red Cross was called in to help the family displaced by the blaze. Fire officials were on the scene for several hours looking into the cause.

Tragedy strikes van crossing river Published on: Tuesday, August 15, 2017 Kota Kinabalu: An Indonesian woman became the first casualty of the current inclement weather when the van she was travelling in with nine Japanese tourists was swept away by strong currents while crossing the Sungai Kg Lingan Lama in Kabang, Papar, Sunday night. The 34-year-old sustained serious injuries when she was pinned under the van in the 8.23pm incident and was pronounced dead at 11pm at the Papar Hospital, according to APM ( Civil Defence Force ). A team from the Civil Defence Force was deployed to the scene after being alerted by Papar for assistance in helping the trapped victims out of the vehicle. It took the team about one hour and 20 minutes to arrive at the scene which was by then only accessible to heavy vehicles due to rain which caused the route to be submerged. According to Police Capt. Brad McKeone, 15 vehicles were broken into at the Park Place at Turtle Run apartment complex located at 3600 Terrapin Lane.   Eight vehicles were left unlocked and seven had their windows smashed either late Saturday night or early Sunday morning . Items stolen were credit cards, an amazon tablet, wallets, identification and cash. McKeone said that Park Place, which is not gated, had no security cameras that they knew of, and so far no witnesses have come forward. “This is part of the message we’re trying to push to our residents: ‘Make a call Make a difference,’” said McKeone. “They [suspects] had to be walking around for awhile making some noise.” Since eight of the vehicle were unlocked, he wants to remind residents to set a reminder on their phones to lock the cars every evening.     “They typically don’t break in if they d...

Grease left unattended on a stove sparked a fire in a Rancho Cucamonga apartment Sunday night , March 1, officials said. The fire was reported at 8:44 p.m. on the second floor of a three- story apartment complex in the 10400 block of Arrow Highway, said Kelley Donaldson, spokeswoman for the Rancho Cucamonga Fire District . A neighbor from the unit above used an extinguisher to help control the fire before firefighters arrived, Donaldson said. About 20 firefighters contained the fire in less than 10 minutes. Damage was confined to the kitchen, she said. Three displaced residents, all male students at a nearby vocational school , Universal Technical Institute , won’t be allowed to return until repairs are made, Donaldson said. The school will find lodging for them in the meantime, she said. No one was injured. Firefighters briefly evacuated the 12- unit apartment building , she said.

A contained trash can fire was put out by responding officers from the Victoria Police Department and Victoria Fire Department at Autumn Park Apartments on Sunday night. The cause of the fire was under investigation. The renter of the home, Ayreonna Turner, 21, was at work when the fire started. BARCELONA, Spain The Latest on the Spain attacks (all times local): 11:30 p.m. Police in the southern French city of Nimes have arrested a man unlawfully carrying a pistol into a train station, but say he is not linked to the attacks in Barcelona. After an evacuation and police operation at the train station Saturday night , the historic city quickly returned to normal, with police returning to their posts. A national police spokesman said the operation began when a passenger alerted police to a man with a weapon. Police quickly found and arrested him, said the spokesman, who was not authorized to be publicly named. The spokesman said the man has no apparent connection to Thursday's attacks around Barcelona, about 380 kilometers southwest of Nimes. BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — The Latest on the Spain attacks (all times local): 5:15 a.m. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has asked people to pray for a young Australian boy who is missing after a vehicle attack on a popular Barcelona promenade that killed 13 people. Turnbull said Saturday that the boy's mother was badly injured and is in a hospital following Friday's attack at the Las Ramblas promenade . Turnbull says the boy's family is searching for him. He did not release the boy's name. Turnbull says: "All of us as parents know the anguish his father is going through, and his whole family is going through, as they rush to seek to find him in Barcelona."
