Water issues cause move in problems at new College Station apartment

Image
COLLEGE STATION , Tex. (KBTX) A number of residents who hoped to move into a new high- rise apartment in College Station were turned away Saturday. Management with Sterling at Northgate sent some of their new tenants an email Friday night that said the property would have a delay in occupancy. The delay meant those tenants would not be able to move-in Saturday. According to the letter, the city will not allow residency in Building Two on August 19th, due to water shut-off to the building. Residents who spoke with KBTX say they were offered a chance to put their belongings inside, but they wouldn’t be able to stay the night. A spokesperson with the property, Merideth Savoie, says the water was turned off for inspections. “The closure affected only one of our buildings,” said Savoie. “As of this evening the water is back on and residents have been notified that they can move in.” Savoie told KBTX if the residents were not able to...

Trip Report for Naked Capitalism Meetups in Burlington, VT and Montréal, PQ

Image
By Lambert Strether of Corrente. We had our Naked Capitalism meetup in Burlington Thursday, August 17, and our meetup in Montréal on Friday, August 18. Seven NC readers attended the Burlington Meetup, some coming a long distance; fourteen — I think, we had to add a table — came to Montréal. I thought both numbers were remarkable; strangers coming together for no other reason than that they read the same blog speaks to a great hunger for connection, IMNSHO, and speaks well of the blog. In Burlington, we met at Zero Gravity Brewpub at Flatbread ( excellent craft beer , excellent pizza). In Montréal, we met at Le Café Cherrier (cuisine bourgeois, again excellent, and bringing back very happy memories for me. And a big hat tip here to the Montréal organizer for selecting the venue; I’m anonymizing them because I’m not sure they wish to be named). Both meetups were very convivial — conviviality is important — and both establishments let us sit and chat for a long time. I hadn’t been to e...

Providence poised to declare River House apartments developer in default of tax treaty - News - providencejournal.com

Kate Bramson Journal Staff Writer journalkate PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Delays by the South Street Landing developers to begin construction early this year on two apartment buildings on a nearby Davol Square parking lot have caused the City Council to consider issuing the project a notice of default. After the developer missed a Jan. 27 deadline to get all city construction permits , the council's Finance Committee voted this month to recommend to the City Council that the city issue a default notice to CV River House LLC , of San Diego, the entity that has planned to build the River House apartments . The default would be for missing a deadline in the project's city tax-stabilization agreement, which limits taxes owed over 15 years to about $3.3 million. The council is expected to consider the issue Thursday night . It could vote to issue the notice or send the matter back to committee. "In order to preserve our rights under the [tax-stabilization agreement], we have to...

Peaches Preaches: The Dirtbag Conundrum

Image
"You walk without a sense of purpose," a Berkeley bar manager once told James "Peaches" Lucas before firing him. A dedicated climber who spent 15 years living out of caves, tents, and then a Saturn station wagon to pursue the sport, Lucas stumbles through life but marches to the boulders, crags, and walls. Peaches Preaches is his monthly column. Photos from the author's dirtbag days, circa 2004.  "You ain't no dirtbag, home boi," a Seattle climber wrote me in a direct message on Instagram. "You talk as though you are because you have been doing it since 2001. You are not a dirtbag; you have Instagram, for crying out loud!" The unsolicited slander caused me to reflect on the dirtbag experience and my role in promoting it. In the past decade, the climbing community has grasped onto the idea that being a dirtbag—that being deliberately impoverished in order to scrap and save every last penny to go climbing—is “cool.” The Seattle climbe...
