UPDATE (WKOW) -- A resident of an apartment building that caught on fire Monday morning is safe, but left everything behind her. "I never expected this to happen," said displaced resident LeAnn Berghoff , who woke up from screams outside her apartment and found her bedroom filling up with smoke. "I looked out the window and I just heard people screaming , get out, get out!" Berghoff says she had no time to think, breaking through her bedroom window to escape. She left with just the clothes on her back. Her roommate, Paul Pankau, was working at the time of the fire but hurried back home after he received a call from Berghoff. "I knew she wasn't lying [about the fire], cause I could hear the sincerity and scared in her voice, she was shocked," said Pankau, recalling his conversation on the phone. About 100 people were ordered out of two squalid Temple Hills condominium buildings Tuesday , but a group of defiant residents said they are not leaving because they have nowhere to go. Fire officials warned the manager, owners and tenants of Lynnhill Condominiums last week about multiple fire-code violations, including towering piles of garbage in trash chutes and trash storage rooms , inoperable fire doors and a broken alarm system . The seven-story twin-tower complex on Good Hope Avenue has struggled with finances and repairs for more than a decade. The Sun Prairie Fire Department was called at 4:04 a.m. to the 600 block of Schiller Street on a report of an apartment fire . Firefighters said there was heavy smoke coming from the building when they arrived. Firefighters from Deforest, Dane, and Columbus assisted at the scene. Fire officials say no one was injured. Twenty-five people were picked up by a Metro bus and taken to the Sun Prairie Middle School . Officials said the school district is providing a place for displaced residents to stay until alternative housing is arranged. The Red Cross is assisting those families, officials said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

They found an active fire and began to put it out immediately. In January 2015, a massive fire in Edgewater, N.J., demonstrated that buildings with sprinkler systems are not always protected against fire. The blaze destroyed 240 residential apartments and displaced 500 people from the Edgewater Avalon apartment building . The fire began when a maintenance worker’s plumbing torch accidentally ignited wooden wall studs , and flames quickly spread throughout the structure. Fifteen minutes passed before workers called the fire department . In that time, the fire spread throughout combustible void spaces (between walls and floors) and soon engulfed the building. SILVER SPRING, MD — Thursday is the one-year anniversary of the devastating explosion at the Flower Branch Apartments that killed seven residents, two of whom were children, and displaced about 100 people. A vigil will be held to remember the victims Thursday evening . The Aug. 10, 2016 blast was caused by a natural gas leak . A total of 28 apartment units were destroyed, and 50 families were displaced by the disaster. Dozens of residents were injured at the scene, some from burns and others from broken bones as they jumped from the third and fourth floors of the buildings. BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A massive fire in Hagerstown has forced more than 70 people from their apartments Tuesday night . It started right after a thunderstorm rolled through. Residents say the fire started right after the building was hit by lightning, and they watched for 30 minutes while the fire department was unable to get enough water on the flames. “It was just horrific. I’ve never seen anything like it before,” said Shawn Lohr, who lives across from the complex. “We heard the lightning hit, but I thought it hit outside on the pavement, and then the next thing I know, the alarm went off,” said Roxie Vickers, who lives in the apartments. WALLKILL, New York (WABC) -- Officials said careless smoking likely sparked a fire that injured several people and destroyed a dozen homes in Orange County, New York, early Tuesday morning . The fire broke out juat after 1 a.m. in the Crestwood Apartments in Wallkill. Strong winds fanned the flames and caused the fire to spread quickly. By the time firefighters arrived at the scene, the entire building was engulfed. DURHAM – A fire that began after 12 noon Monday appeared to affect all 20 units of an apartment building before firefighters could get the blaze under control. No injuries were reported and all 40 of the building’s occupants were accounted for, according to the Durham Fire Department . In all, the fire displaced 30 residents as the building has been deemed a total loss with fire or smoke and water damage affecting all of the units. The fire took place at the Royal Oaks Apartments  on Mayfair Street near the Sam’s Club and Target on 15-501—north of the exit for Martin Luther King , Jr. Parkway. Fire rescue crews were called to a high rise apartment building fire in Northeast Miami -Dade. The incident happened Saturday afternoon at the 7900 block of Northeast Bayshore Court . According to officials, the building was evacuated after reports of a fire in the second floor storage room . The fire was contained to a small corner thanks to the buildings’ sprinkler system. The fire was eventually put out by fire rescue. There wasn’t too much damage, but the sprinkler system damaged electrical wires . There was also significant water damage . No one was injured. A two-alarm fire at the Silverbrook Apartments on the 13000 block of Emily Road has displaced 13 residents and damaged at least four apartments. Dallas Fire and Rescue responded to the fire at 2 p.m. Monday, when they noticed smoke and flames rising from a first-story apartment in the two-story building. Five residents of that apartment were not home, and eight people who were in the apartment above safely exited when they noticed smoke, firefighters said. No one was injured in the blaze, but 8 adults and 5 children have been displaced. Firefighters said they had notified the American Red Cross on their behalf. The cause of the fire is unknown.

Update: Investigators suspect arson in Stonebrook Apartments fire GRAND RAPIDS — Residents fled to safety Sunday night as firefighters were able to quickly put out a fire that caused extensive damage to an apartment on the city’s Northeast Side. The fire department was called to the Stonebrook Apartments , off Plymouth Avenue NE between Michigan and Leonard streets, just after 10:30 pm. Smoke was reported coming from the apartment when the first units arrived. Apartment residents were out of the building before fire units arrived . No one was injured. The American Red Cross was called in to help the family displaced by the blaze. Fire officials were on the scene for several hours looking into the cause.

Grease left unattended on a stove sparked a fire in a Rancho Cucamonga apartment Sunday night , March 1, officials said. The fire was reported at 8:44 p.m. on the second floor of a three- story apartment complex in the 10400 block of Arrow Highway, said Kelley Donaldson, spokeswoman for the Rancho Cucamonga Fire District . A neighbor from the unit above used an extinguisher to help control the fire before firefighters arrived, Donaldson said. About 20 firefighters contained the fire in less than 10 minutes. Damage was confined to the kitchen, she said. Three displaced residents, all male students at a nearby vocational school , Universal Technical Institute , won’t be allowed to return until repairs are made, Donaldson said. The school will find lodging for them in the meantime, she said. No one was injured. Firefighters briefly evacuated the 12- unit apartment building , she said.

According to officials at the Brookdale Senior Living facility , located on Old Diamond Hill Road , there was a fire in an apartment around 1:30 p.m. Fire crews responded and required the building to be evacuated. No injuries were reported from either residents or associates. “Those residents who are displaced due to the fire and water damage will be relocated to other living spaces. We are grateful to our associates who responded quickly and assisted residents to exit from the building safely,” said Heather Hunter with Brookdale Senior Living Inc.
